Ford announced yesterday that the European market will be the first to experience the new Ford Focus with the 1.0-liter in-line 3 cylinder EcoBoost engine. The tiny turbo-charged engine will come in both a 99 horsepower version and a 118 horsepower version and will have the performance of a 1.6-liter I-4, while getting significantly better fuel economy.
Both versions of the 1.0-liter engine will be available only with a manual transmission, the 99-hp model gets a 5 speed and the 118-hp version will get an upgrade to a 6 speed. No official torque numbers have been released by Ford.
Ford tells us the new 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine will make its debut in Europe inside the 2012 Ford Focus, and eventually plans to expand the use to the C-Max and the B-Max later in 2012. After a successful launch in Europe, Ford will take the engine to China, North American and other major world markets. If rumors are correct we are likely to only see the 118-hp version of the small engine stateside, but only time will tell.
