According to the Insurance HIS Automotive, in 2015 the Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe in the world, topping the charts by selling 110,000 Mustangs and 30,000 Mustang convertibles last year. 2015 was the first year the Mustang was available overseas.
The Mustang has seen significant growth in the US in addition to its success overseas. Coastal areas of the US like Southern California have seen many more millennials buying Mustangs, particularly those equipped with EcoBoost engines.
Ford notes that the Mustang’s popularity can still grow overseas as more markets offer it. Drivers from other countries, unlike American drivers, tend to prefer Mustangs equipped with the available V8 engine.
For the first several months of 2016, the Mustang has continued to rise in popularity, becoming the best-selling sports car in France for the first quarter of the year. Germany is the most popular country for the convertible, selling one for every three hard-top cars. Additional Mustangs had to be produced for Australia because it was sold out through 2017.
Finally, Mustang has held its lead in the North American market, where it has consistently outsold the Camaro in Canada and been the most popular sports car in Mexico since 2014.
