The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic sports cars on the market, and the 2018 model year has added a feature that allows enthusiasts to get the most muscle out of their Mustangs. The new burnout feature allows drivers to burn rubber at the push of a button—a “line lock” which locks up the front wheels so the rear tires can kick up some smoke. That may seem like just an excuse to indulge in some classic muscle car antics, but it does add to the driving experience of in the 2018 Ford Mustang.
How does it work? To put it simply, allowing the rear tires to get going before unlocking the front wheels lets drivers bypass gradual acceleration time so that they can “peel out” as soon as they let off the line lock. They’ll be able to access the feature through a menu on the 2018 Mustang’s instrument cluster, which builds pressure on the front brakes for up to 15 seconds.
This feature has been available on previous model years, but only on the Mustang GT equipped with a V8 engine. It’s now offered on all Mustangs, including equipped with the base-level engine.
