scenic drives in Shenandoah Valley

There is no shortage of stunning natural sights around our hometown, Staunton, Virginia. When the weekend comes around, there are a thousand ways to enjoy the incredible beauty of our region, but one of our favorite ways is just a good, old-fashioned joy ride.

In our neck of the woods, you could take almost any road for spectacular sight-seeing, but here are a few of our favorite scenic drives in Shenandoah Valley.

  1. Blue Ridge Parkway

Running along the eastern edge of the Valley, the Blue Ridge Parkway puts 469 miles of breathtaking mountains and dazzling forest on display. Head north to see Shenandoah National Park, or south if you’re looking to visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

  1. Skyline Drive

This designated “National Scenic Byway” winds through 105 miles of up-in-the-air roadway, taking you past 75 scenic overlooks and giving you access to dozens of maintained hiking trails. Keep an eye out for the abundant wildlife!

  1. Wilderness Road

Why not do a little learning while you’re on the road? Wilderness Road follows the westward route of some of America’s earliest European settlers. Wilderness Road is divided into two loops, the Great Wagon Loop and Roanoke Loop, with designated stops at museums, landmarks, and cultural centers. This is a great drive for families!
